Clubs and Activities
Imaginations are brought to life with clubs and activities.
Students at Kirby “dream big” and pursue their many interests in Kirby's faculty-advised activities and clubs. From chess and strategy games to community service initiatives, our co-curricular activities support a wide range of interests. Driven by our values, we pair passionate faculty with activities and interests students want to explore. The outcome is inspiring.
Any student can start a club. They can range from the traditional to the obscure and from the serious to the sublime. They can also vary year to year, depending on the interests of our students.

Clubs that Create Connections
Arcade and Table Games
Play ping pong, air hockey, skeeball and a variety of other games in the Dubois Garage.
Cheer Club
No experience necessary, all are welcome. Create fun cheers and dance routines. Bring the Kirby spirit to life!
Cooking Club
We will be making food at home using Covid safe protocols, and bringing our food into school. We will organize bake sales to raise money for food-related organizations in our community. We will create a cooking club cookbook and share recipes throughout the year.
D&D Club
D&D Club is a place for students to connect and learn about Dungeons and Dragons, the world-famous role-playing game. In this club, we will help people learn to play, participate in D&D-related games, and learn a bit about each other along the way! Club time will be used for shorter activities; we will run campaigns during after-school time.
Garden Club
In this club we will deepen our understanding and connection with seeds, soil, plants, water, and compost. We will grow and tend to a diverse array of plants (ranging in uses from food, fiber, dye, to ornamental), and will have many hands-on opportunities to beautify our Rooftop space through sustainable gardening practices.
GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance)
A safe-space for those wanting to discuss LGBTQIA+ issues in the Kirby community, or greater society. You don’t need to identify as LGBTQIA+ to join. It’s a space for allies as well!
Media Production Club
We explore and analyze things like popular anime, foods, fashion trends, and gaming culture. We will have activities like kahoots, playing games, watching shows, and making costumes/cosplays. If possible, we could go on mini field trips. And we could have a fashion show using cosplay and trending fashion ideas taken from the media.
Sports Talk Club
Sports Talk Club is a club that talks about major sports, such as NBA, NFL and some others. Last year, we practiced some of our debate skills and worked on listening to others and allowing for equity of voice. As the club grows, we may develop our ideas and expand our horizons (a podcast or some other channel).
Strategy/Board/Card Games Club
Come and play board games, strategy games, card games and more. Get away from technology for a while and interact socially while developing problem solving and strategy skills, and just enjoying yourself! You don’t have to come every club time nor do you need to be there for the whole length of club time, just when you want to, for as long as you want to.
Clubs that Offer Academic Challenge
3D Printing Club
This student-led group will spend club time learning how to design and execute 3D printing projects. No experience needed!
Accelerated Math Circle (HS)
The goal of the accelerated math circle is to both prepare students who wish to compete in the American Mathematics Competition, and to provide mathematics enrichment for students who want more time to engage in high level mathematics. Any student interested in chatting about math or sharing a fun problem they have been working on is encouraged to attend.
The Acorn: Kirby’s Nonfiction Journal
The Acorn is a student led team of editors that selects and edits students’ nonfiction work to be published in the journal each semester. The journal intends to highlight student research and analysis from all disciplines. High schoolers who enjoy reading and editing should come to our Thursday lunch meetings. Submissions are welcome from both middle and high schoolers.
Chess Club
Chess Club focuses on playing for fun, both competitively and just goofing around. All ages and skill levels are invited. We can even play “bughouse” (team chess) if we get enough interested players.
Ethics Bowl
We debate contemporary issues of ethics using a variety of philosophical schools and compete against other high-school teams from northern California. Kirby’s team has been very successful in its three years and has twice sent a team to nationals.
Environmental Activism Club
A hands-on service learning club where the focus is on reducing Kirby’s environmental footprint, maintaining and advancing our rooftop garden, and participating in ecologically-minded community events.
Interrobang, the Literary Magazine
The all-student staff of Interrobang reads submissions of poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction (e.g. the personal essay) and selects the best student work to produce two issues of the magazine per year (one per semester). We welcome submissions from both middle school and high school students. We welcome new prospective staff members! We invite any Kirby student with a strong interest in reading, writing, and ideas to join us.
JSA (Junior State of America)
In addition to weekly meetings, this club engages in three weekend overnight conferences: Fall State, Winter Congress, and Spring State. Each conference has a slightly different theme, but students will be required to engage in the conference activities such as formal debates, bill proposals, and political party caucuses. The mission of the Junior State of America and the Junior Statesmen Foundation (JSA) is to strengthen American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. In the student-run Junior State and at JSA summer schools and summer institutes, participants learn statesmanship as they engage in political discourse. They cultivate democratic leadership skills, challenge one another to think critically, advocate their own opinions, develop respect for opposing views and learn to rise above self-interest to promote the public good.

Clubs that Develop Creativity and Adaptability
Black Student Union
The Black Student Union (BSU) is an organization dedicated to encouraging cultural diversity throughout high schools and colleges throughout the country with special regard to students of African descent.
Members of the administration, the student body, and the local community will partner to participate in activities that represent cultural diversity at Kirby. High school students will participate in the County-Wide BSU activities while middle school students will participate more locally and on campus. Students can be a part of another club and BSU!
The Blank Slate
The Blank Slate is an art magazine that launched its first digital issue in Spring 2021 by Juliet McKinney and Vanessa McKelvey. All high school students are encouraged to join the club and contribute their ideas, artwork, and articles. The Blank Slate’s mission is to connect the Kirby community through art, to give Kirby artists a platform to share their art and creations, and to provide resources for aspiring artists.

Yearbook Club
Join the Yearbook Club for a chance to make memories that will last a lifetime. Design, arrange, take pictures, interact with Kirby students and faculty. Be a part of history!

Entrepreneurship Club
Entrepreneurship Club is a space for students to develop creative projects that benefit the community. We’re specifically looking for students who want to help develop a peer tutoring program at Kirby, but any new ideas are welcomed and encouraged. We plan events and activities for Kirby students, and we learn some of the basics of budgeting, organizing, and marketing. We also occasionally feature guest speakers who have started their own businesses.
