8th Grade Play: A Drama and a Comedy

6:30 pm Tues, May 22
Kirby’s Great Hall
425 Encinal Street, Santa Cruz
Kirby’s 8th grade drama class presents a drama and a comedy, “The Orphan Train” and “To Date or Not to Date.”
“The Orphan Train” tells the story of nine orphans on an “orphan train” that left New York City on May 28, 1914, and traveled to U.S. Midwestern towns in search of homes for the children. In this charming heart-warmer, their stories unfold, each a memorable surprise, and the train chugs between encounters of anxiety, laughter, wistfulness, rejection, and acceptance.
In the comedy “To Date or Not to Date,” Shakespearean worlds collide as the Bard’s most famous characters go out on blind dates with each other. Can Romeo woo Lady Macbeth before she goes mad? Will Juliet marry King Lear or will her Nurse stand in the way? How will Joan of Arc inspire Hamlet to finally take action? Can Bottom really date all three witches at the same time? Hosted by waiter Puck, “To Date or Not to Date” is a wild ride of unlikely matchups and unexpected romances.
Admission is FREE.

Fall Musical: Curtains

2:00 pm Sat-Sun, November 19-20
Louden Nelson Community Center
301 Center Street, Santa Cruz
Curtains is a Tony-Award winning musical with a book by Rupert Holmes, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander, with additional lyrics by Kander and Holmes. Based on the original book and concept by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts and follows the fallout when the supremely untalented leading lady of Robbin’ Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call and the entire cast and crew are suspects. It is up to a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself. Nominated for eight Tony Awards and nine Drama Desk Awards in 2007, including Best Musical.

Spring Play: Dear Brutus
7:30 pm Thur-Sat, April 19-20-21
2:00 pm Sat-Sun, April 21-22
Titled after the Shakespeare line, “The fault lies in our selves, dear Brutus, not in our stars…” this lovely fantasy by J.M. Barrie poses the question: What if we could live our lives over again? Given a second chance, will people still make the same mistakes? “Dear Brutus” explores what might happen if ordinary men and women, mired in unhappiness, were given the magical opportunity to remake their lives, or, as the butler Matey says, the chance to “take the right turning.” The play investigates the human proclivity to blame fate for our failures and unhappiness, and provides the audience with penetrating insights into human nature.
