Science
Middle School
Kirby’s middle school science program is the foundation for the high school science course sequence. It provides an overview of the core sciences and introduces many of the skills that are essential to more advanced study and independent scientific investigation. Sixth graders study geology, meteorology, and ecology; seventh graders study life science; and eighth graders study physical science including some earth science and astronomy. Eighth graders will also complete a project for the annual Science Fair working with teachers in-class and with a mentor outside of class. Kirby students have earned numerous awards at the County, State and National levels.
High School
Kirby’s core high school science program is a sequence of six courses – four one-semester courses and one yearlong course. Most students begin the sequence in ninth grade, but that is not always the case. Students intending to take multiple AP science courses may also choose to accelerate this sequence by taking two core classes concurrently.
Grade 9
Living Systems and Energy (1 semester/each)
Grade 10
Chemistry (full year)
Grade 11
Molecular Biology or Human Biology (1 semester) and
Engineering Mechanics or Honors Engineering Mechanics (1 semester)
AP Science Course Offerings (offered on alternating years)
AP Environmental Science
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B
