Math
Math students are placed in courses according to readiness, not by grade. Through early and follow-up placement tests, students have the opportunity to prepare in advance and then start at the point in the curriculum that best fits their development and preparation.
The Kirby math program is designed to guide students in developing a mastery of fundamental math concepts and to cultivate strong problem solving skills. The regular review and incorporation of past topics allows students to achieve mastery of each concept and integrate them with new ideas as they are presented. By learning math concepts within authentic contexts, and through the increasing use of technology, students develop the ability to readily apply their math knowledge and skills to real-life applications, using them to solve real problems.
The high school math sequence begins with Algebra and continues with Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus (with trigonometry), and then AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics. Kirby math students should feel very prepared for any of the standard tests they choose to take – the SAT, SAT II, AP Calculus BC (or AB), and AP Statistics exams. Every year, Kirby students also have the opportunity to participate in mathematics contests, and they have been very successful in various divisions.
