Fitness and Wellness
Kirby’s Fitness and Wellness Program promotes knowledge of the human body and instills a life-long commitment to health, wellness and physical development.
Middle School Fitness and Wellness
The Middle School Fitness and Wellness program is an integrated, developmentally-appropriate introduction to fitness activities and wellness topics designed to inspire a life-long commitment to health and well-being.
Fitness class “rotations” include traditional group sports and games as well as activities such as yoga, hiking, cooperative games, and dance. All contribute to the goal of instilling team-building skills, good sportsmanship, and personal resiliency, while heightening social and emotional learning.
In the wellness class “rotations,” students actively explore issues relating to identity development, friendship, internet safety, communication, exercise, posture, nutrition, body image, media literacy, and time/stress management. Wellness Class “rotations” also include an in-depth Study Skills program, gender, sexuality, environmental awareness, and safety. The goal is to engage students in critical thinking and problem-solving activities designed to improve their personal understanding of wellness while learning to communicate positive, healthy messages to others.
Sixth grade students take only Fitness, while seventh and eighth grade students take both Fitness and Wellness.
High School Fitness and Wellness
High school graduation requires one semester of health credit and four semesters of fitness credit. Students fulfill the fitness requirement by enrolling in Contract Fitness which requires participation by students in sports or fitness activities for a minimum of 4 hours per week throughout the semester. In addition to outside activities, participation in a Kirby athletic team or club can be used to fulfill a student’s Fitness requirement.
